Freedom To Read Week

This week is Freedom To Read Week in Canada, a week where Canadians are encouraged to see for themselves which books have been challenged (everything from the Bible to Harry Potter and lots in between) and to celebrate our rights to read. There's even a photo contest I intend to enter.

Sadly, the week has opened with news of Hunter S. Thompson's suicide. While I could never count myself as a fan, I respect his contributions to journalism and his ability to pinpoint absurdities around him.

"Freedom to Read Week" is a much better spin on it than the American counterpart - "Banned Book Week" (which just makes it sound like something lacivious.

Good luck with the contest.

Star: It's just typical of our collective politeness, I'm sure :)

Syed: Alas, we don't get the week off to read! But we are encouraged to see what all the fuss is about.

As a pallid bookworm I celebrate any encouragement to read, and I was going to chat about that but was brought up short by HST's suicide. Good grief, I have been out of touch. I'm a fan from way back -- although many of his ideas are hard to swallow, I hasten to add.

I am dashing off any moment to rip the lid off my box of Savage Sword of Conan comics. I only have to wait a moment, for the thrill of freedom has made my fingers vibrate.

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Bye, bye, its been a sweet love.
Though this feeling I can't change.
But please don't take it badly,
'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame.
But, if I stayed here with you girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you'll never change.
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Lord help me, I can't change.
