Responsibility as determined by the state

Newcastle Brown Ale is among the first brews which will carry health warning, "Responsible drinkers don't exceed three to four units a day for men and two to three for women," along with an indication of the number of units per bottle or can.

Is it just me, or does that seem really preachy and condescending? Oddly, in light of this, I think I can finally grasp what has irked smokers all these years...

"Units?" What the hell? Like we're going to do the math. What's wrong with pints & bottles?

I see these health warnings as more of a CYA anti-liability measure than anything else. It's really a smooth move by brewers, because they know it's not going to significantly impact consumption. As is the case with cigarettes, the only people who alter their consumption are those who were going to do it anyway.

All of this show they're putting into looking responsible is a drop in the bucket. When they stop advertising drinking as sexy and cool, then I'll begin to believe something is really happening.
