Move Over, Undersea Gardens....

... Oceanic Discovery wants in. From their front page:

SeaScaping is a Victoria, B.C. company formed by a consortium of locally owned companies that want to bring a bit of the tourism flair and excellence to aquatic developments in whatever shape and form they may be in. With focus on conveying conservation messages in a dynamic exciting "edventure" for all targetted guests visiting these structures.

Our lead project is Oceanic Discovery Center, an unique aquarium/event center designed for downtown Victoria, B.C. This structure will revitalize the tourism industry and rejuvenate the City as a leader tourist attraction as it once was.

What? Where did this come from? After ignoring the bad grammar in that press release/bumf, it looks like these people are trying to promote waterworld on land. Lemme tell ya what this reminds me of... years ago, we did a play for the Fringe Festival. It was about politics, and featured plans for "LawnLand: a complete lawn activity centre" with indoor lawn bowling, lawn darts, putting greens, picnic area, and so on. The only differences I can see here is that we chose "lawn" over "ocean" and we were kidding.

There's a poll over there... I encourage y'all to take it.

Is this supposed to be the new use for the Coho terminal? Have these people heard of the BC Experience? Don't they know that Victoria is almost supersaturated with tourist traps? Another BC Experience might cause the entire city to slide into the ocean! They're playing with our lives, here!

Seriously: this is a stupid idea. Why can't Victoria attract investors in value-added industries? We need less aquariums and more light industry or technology companies.

Tim, I hear ya. I actually explored the site a bit because I was looking for the punchline. Sigh.

If they could create something like Monterey Aquarium, and combine tourism with research, conservation and onsite animal rehab, it could be moral, self-sustaining and lucrative (esp when funded by a variety of sources).

Pastilla: that I would buy into -- even Vancouver's aquarium has a research arm -- but unfortunately, these two just want an attraction with "pizazz."

We already have an aquarium that most locals visit only when friends come to town. This one would have to be different and researh based. Anything 'glitzly' like BC experience and they would have to pay for it themselves. We don't need another debt.
