Little Shop of Horrors Market

Hubby and I are off to the Little Shop of Horrors from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. -- we have a table at the Zombie/Halloween Market being held at Logan's Pub, 1821 Cook Street...

I'll be taking Creative Miscellany monsters, a few other odds and ends plus the Special Zombie edition of Bümfmag.

Zombies, zombies everywhere....

Victoria used to be known, jokingly, as the home of the newly wed and nearly dead but I am starting to think it may be the home of the newly dead and nearly wed.

This year, the zombie walk has tried to go "legit" -- complete with permits and sponsors. They also chose to move the officially-blessed walk to Halloween day; in part to coordinate with the Comic Convention that is one of the primary sponsors (those in costume get in for reduced rate. woo). Unfortunately, this move pissed off those who think a zombie walk should be closer to a flash mob than a parade so they have organized a separate walk on a different day -- I am currently getting event invites for both on Facebook.

On top of that, there is a little thing called the Olympics. The torch relay starts here on October 30th and there will be plenty of protests to go along with it including, you guessed it, another zombie walk -- this one "in memoriam" for missing women, residential school survivors, those who have died at the hand of police, and so on.

Oh, and did I mention, a zombie craft fair, too? (it was supposed to follow the official zombie walk, hence the other date) Hubby and I will be participating in the craft fair; Kiddo and I are working on a special Zombie edition of Bümfmag for the occasion. I tried to make some plush zombie stuff... but so far it has been a "pit of fail"... but I will at least be there to keep him company and hawk his wares.

I think after October ends, though, I'm going to need some zombie-free time.

The Weekend Cometh.

This week has had an elastic quality. Monday and Tuesday seemed to take forever, slowly stretching well into Wednesday but sometime yesterday everything seemed to snap back to normal and now it's Friday.

It was pointed out to me that my banner up there includes a typo and though I promised to fix it, I keep forgetting to do so. I will fix it this weekend. Really. If I don't, you have my permission to flood my inbox with comments to remind me.

Anyway, here's some fun/interesting stuff out there in the world:

A new digital collection at the University of Buffalo features pulp fiction book covers -- over 500 of the library's collection of 30,000 pulp fiction books and magazines. Browse the collection for some great eye candy.

I'm sure after reading about the return of textile coffins, someone out there will try to knit or quilt their own. It's an interesting idea but a green/natural burial is still the ideal as far as biodegradability goes.

For the zombie film-makers in the audience, there is a zombie short film festival coming up in Toronto later this year (tentatively October 30th) -- there is a $20 entry fee, films need to run under 20 min and be submitted on DVD by October 1st.

Although I didn't think I would start to grow bored of zombies, I realized I am already looking for the next trend -- monsters? Maybe, if Where the Wild Things Are doesn't tank at the box office. ...

Me and Zombie McGee

This exercise was prompted by a friend's Facebook status -- she posted the line, "Zombie's just another word for nothing left to lose" and I immediately thought, "I could re-write that whole song." I told her so and now, here's my first attempt (with apologies to Kris Kristofferson, Fred Foster and Janis Joplin)...

I met him down in Baton Rouge, lookin for some brains,
His skin almost the colour of my jeans.
Zombie thumbed a diesel down, ate the driver’s brains,
Then rode us all the way to New Orleans.
Took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
And was blowin sad while Zombie sang the blues,
With them windshield wipers slappin time and
Zombie clappin hands we finally sang up every song
That Zombie knew.

Zombie’s just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin aint worth nothin but its free,
Feelin dead was easy, Lord, when Zombie sang the blues,
And buddy, that was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my Zombie McGee.

From the coal mines of Kentucky to the California sun,
Zombie ate hitchhikers young and old,
Standin right beside me through everythin I done,
And every night his body felt so cold.
The somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I cut his head off clean,
He was lookin for more brains and eying mine,
Well I’d trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday,
Wishin' Zombie’s body was alive.

Zombie’s just another word for nothin left to lose,
And nothin aint worth nothin but its free,
Feelin dead was easy, Lord, when Zombie sang the blues,
And buddy, that was good enough for me,
Good enough for me and my Zombie McGee.

La la la, la la la la, la la la, la la la la
La la la la la Zombie McGee.
La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, Zombie McGee, la.

La La la, la la la la la la,
La La la la la la la la la, ain't no blood in my Zombie McGee yeah.
Na na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na na na na na
Hey now Zombie now, Zombie McGee, yeah.

Lord, I'm calling my lover, calling my man,
I said I'm calling my lover just a dead old man,
C'mon, hey now Zombie yeah, hey now Zombie McGee, yeah,
Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lord
Hey, hey, hey, Zombie McGee, Lord!

Yeah! Whew!
Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy Lord
Hey, hey, hey, Zombie McGee.

Friday Follies undead edition

Star used to regularly write "Friday Follies" posts and seldom a Friday goes by when I don't think about them and how wise she was to post every Monday and Friday (coincidentally the days when my page views here are also highest.) So, here for you are some fun, silly, and interesting things out there on the web:

  • Spelling with Zombies. Much better than those glitter words applications and you get results like this:

    Zombie Letters from e-zombie.com

  • Speaking of (un)dead... how about bookshelves which convert into a coffin after you're gone?

  • Or maybe you just feel a little undead and could use some caffeine. I'm looking forward to trying out this method of cold-brewing coffee concentrate for summer iced coffees. However, I really want to point you toward one of the most beautiful espresso maker designs ever: the Otto. I love designs that are so bold they look like nothing that has come before; the Otto definitely fits that bill.

  • And finally, some video fun....classic Ray Harryhausen stop-motion skeletons from 1963:
